Why do some grooms choose their dogs as their best man? Well, the answer is simple, their best man should be their best buddy, and it’s no secret that dogs are best friends to many people. Also, it’s important for these people to make their fur babies part of their special day.
For army veteran Justin Lansford, his best man is more than just his best friend, but rather a savior that helped him get back up, both literally and figuratively. Justin was a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division in the United States Army. In 2012, he was deployed in Afghanistan, and this tour changed his life completely.
The truck that his team was riding struck an improvised explosive device, and the accident shattered the femur on his left leg. The damage to Justin’s leg was so severe that doctors had to amputate his leg, and this meant his service in the army was over. When Justin went back home, he was diagnosed with PTSD.
He contacted Warrior Canine Connections to get some help, and this is when he met Gabe. This handsome boy literally helped Justin get back up by being a stable surface to lean on. On top of this, Gabe also helped him with his PTSD. Gabe and Justin instantly became best friends, and they were inseparable.
When Justin popped the big question to his long-time girlfriend Carol Balmes, he knew that Gabe had to play a part in their big day. If it weren’t for this pup, Justin probably wouldn’t have managed his injuries, both physically and psychologically. When the big day came, Gabe looked extremely handsome in his military uniform.
He also served as the ring bearer for the wedding, and this good boy performed his duties well. Justin and Carol decided to thank Warrior Canine Connections by helping them foster puppies that will undergo therapy dog training. This way, they will help more veterans get back on track; the same way the organization helped Justin.
