When Cheddar was eight years old, one of his owners fell ill, and the family couldn’t look after the dog anymore. The decision to give him to a rescue center was heartbreaking, and it seemed Cheddar’s life took a sad turn. Then, the Golden Retriever was adopted into a new family and found a new best friend in a neighbor.
Described as a very needy dog by his new owner, Shelley Vassall, Cheddar loves as much attention as he can get. He loves to be patted and will sit for hours if someone is willing to pet him. The Golden is an extremely social dog and fell in love with one particular person more than others: a neighbor named Jean.
Cheddar and Shelley were out walking one day when they saw an older couple in their front yard. Stopping to chat, Cheddar was immediately drawn to the woman, named Jean. Every day they walk past Jean’s house so Cheddar can visit with her. If they skip a day, the dog will be very vocal about it. Cheddar knows what street Jean lives on, and if they walk in another direction, the dog will pull on the leash to switch directions!
If Shelley passes by Jean’s home with Cheddar, the dog will stop at the house and refuse to move. The older neighbor usually will have cookies ready for Cheddar when he visits. However, it’s not just the cookies the Golden Retriever is after. Shelley says the dog has a real bond with Jean and it’s unlike anything the dog’s owner has ever seen.
Visiting with Jean brings the Golden Retriever such joy, and he never wants to leave her side. He loves to be pet by Jean, or roll in her grass. Cheddar is eleven years old now and has slowed down quite a bit. Both the Golden Retriever and his elderly best friend have benefitted from their amazing friendship!
